Pero no es menos cierto que hasta la década de los 80, la rivalidad entre los dos equipos de la capital, suponía el gran duelo, por lo menos a nivel de los jugadores, tal y como algunos jugadores veteranos han reconocido muchas veces.

Y desde cuando arranca esta rivalidad? Pues podríamos decir que desde siempre, porque como es lógico la rivalidad entre los dos grandes clubes de la capital es muy antigua, casi desde el momento mismo del nacimiento mismo de ambos clubes.

Hemos de decir que el primer partido del que si se tiene una constancia real entre los dos equipos data de 1905, concretamente un 27 de Febrero, donde tuvo lugar un partido amistoso entre los que entonces eran los primeros y segundos equipos de cada una de las dos entidades, algo que en aquella época era muy frecuente, acabando con empate.

El primer partido oficial data del 2 de Diciembre de 1906 en el CAMPEONATO REGIONAL CENTRO. Se trataba de un campeonato en el que como su nombre indica participaban los equipos que estuviesen dentro de la llamada por entonces FEDERACION CASTELLANA DE FUTBOL, siendo uno de los grandes impulsores CARLOS PADROS.  Y podríamos decir que la rivalidad arranca ahí, en ese Campeonato Regional, donde durante su historia, se produjeron duelos intensos. Ese es el inicio de la rivalidad, por cuanto que durante esos años se disputaron los títulos, generándose enfrentamientos cada año que iban incrementando esa rivalidad. Baste recordar a modo de ejemplo, la edición de 1916 donde se vivió un duelo de alta tensión entre ambos cuando se disputó el último partido, con resultado final de 3-2 para el Madrid que se proclamó campeón, señalando las crónicas de la época, que los aficionados «colchoneros» llegaron a asaltar el terreno de juego con la intención de agredir al colegiado. En los años posteriores de la competición se produjeron varios enfrenamientos, que son el germen de la actual rivalidad.

En definitiva, ya desde los orígenes de ambos clubes, y al nivel regional en los primeros años, la rivalidad fue máxima.

Hoy esa rivalidad se ha traslado a nivel nacional, y también Europeo, por los duelos en Europa, y que demuestran que se trata sin duda de uno de los derbis mas calientes del fútbol mundial. Y de momento, con resultado favorable para el REAL MADRID.
