Al ser España un país de envidiosos, todos nuestros males vienen de haber sido tantas veces campeones. Santiago Bernabéu.

El martes 2 de junio se conmemoró el aniversario de la muerte de D. SANTIAGO BERNABEU, ocurrida el 2 de Junio de 1978. Son ya 42 años sin la presencia de nuestro gran Presidente.

Mucho se ha dicho, y mucho ya sabemos sobre la figura de este hombre que impulsó al club a los altares del deporte mundial. Como homenaje quisiera hacer en este blog referencia a sus inicios dentro de club, y en concreto, a su etapa como jugador y entrenador, facetas estas mas desconocidas para muchos de nosotros.

D. SANTIAGO BERNABEU

Nacido en Almansa el 8 de Junio de 1895, los inicios de la relación de BERNABEU con el MADRID, se remontan a la época en que ingresó en las categorías juveniles del MADRID FOOTBALL CLUB (actual REAL MADRID),  del que su hermano Antonio era uno de los socios fundadores. Empezó de delantero centro. Y con 16 años tuvo un debut oficioso con el primer equipo en un partido ante el ENGLISH SPORT CLUB, anotando un gol. Pero seria en 1914 cuando pasó de forma definitiva a formar parte de la disciplina del primer equipo. En sus años en el club destacó por su capacidad goleadora, sobre todo junto con LOSADA. Fue jugador del Madrid hasta 1927 con una marca impresionante, 68 goles en 79 partidos, consiguiendo diez títulos, casi todos ellos del CAMPEONATO REGIONAL CENTRO, que era la competición en aquellas épocas.

Tras colgar las botas fue delegado del primer equipo y compartió el puesto de entrenador junto con PERIS LLORENTE durante dos años., De ahí ya dio el salto a la Directiva donde permaneció siempre. Sería un 15 de Septiembre de 1943 cuando D. SANTIAGO BERNABEU fue nombrado Presidente del Madrid, y no tardó ni un año, en comprar los terrenos para la construcción del nuevo Estadio.

Desde entones, todos sabemos los logros de nuestro querido Presidente, logros que se resumen en 6 Copas de Europa, 16 Ligas y 6 Copas de España en fútbol, y 6 Copas de Europa, 19 Ligas y 18 de Copas del Rey en Baloncesto, ademas de un Mundial de clubes de fútbol, y 3 de Baloncesto. Todo ello sin contar con el inmenso legado al club, y a la Copa de Europa de la que fue uno de sus grandes impulsores.
